The WOOP method, developed by Gabriele Oettingen, is a self-regulation strategy that effectively helps to set and achieve goals. WOOP stands for ‘Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan’ and in this article we explain how the method works:

The name of the method says it all and thus provides a step-by-step guide to its application, so to speak:
1. wish: First, we identify a specific wish or goal that we want to achieve. This wish should be challenging but not unrealistic and should also answer the question of why this goal is important.
2. outcome (result): In the second step, we visualise the positive outcome that we will achieve if we actually realise the wish. We also focus on the feeling that we would experience and what differences the achievement would make.
3. obstacle: Now we identify possible obstacles or barriers that we might encounter on the way to our goal. An honest and realistic view of potential problems is very important here.
4. plan: In the fourth and final step, we develop a concrete plan to overcome the identified obstacles. This plan should include actions that have already been formulated and also take into account potential supporters that we need in the process.
The WOOP method is characterised by the combination of positive visualisation with a realistic view of obstacles and a detailed action plan - the focus is on promoting the implementation of goals. This method can effectively help to take a structured approach, look at different perspectives, increase motivation and improve the chances of achieving set goals!
It is suitable for 1:1 coaching as well as for working with teams and organisations. What is important here is the role of the coach, who asks effective questions, pays attention to the time frame and structure and ensures that all participants have a common understanding of the aspects.
Imagine your team has the goal of improving the feedback culture. The positive result? Uncovering potential for improvement, building trust and cohesion and continuous learning. Inhibitions to give critical feedback and uncertainty regarding effective communication could prove to be an obstacle.
Your plan? Talk to the team about possible inhibitions, explain the consequences of leaving critical feedback unspoken and use appropriate methods to support them in trying out feedback in a safe environment.
The WOOP method is not just a tool, but a mindset. It helps you to stay focussed in complex environments and at the same time react flexibly to new challenges. So, grab your creativity and realise your goals with momentum and WOOP!
If you're ready to tackle your goals with a smile, the WOOP method is your perfect partner. Try it out and experience how you can achieve your ambitious goals with ease and efficiency.
